May 29, 2020
As we conclude Week #11 of our extraordinary measures to manage COVID-19 at the Leamington Mennonite Home, I want to provide just a bit of an update as to how things are going.
Most importantly, and especially now that we've come through an outbreak experience, we believe that at this moment we are virus-free again! That said, all measures implemented prior to our ten-day outbreak period remain in place. Unfortunately, by way of Ministry of Health order, this includes no visitors to either the Long-Term Care Home or Retirement Residence. We know this is very difficult for residents as well as their friends and family, but this is part of the continued provisions that we must leave in place to try and keep both Homes virus-free.
Many of you have been taking advantage of window and patio visits. Just a reminder that the rules of social distancing for window and patio visits remain in effect. We kindly ask that if you're coming for a window or patio visit, you remain 6 feet back from the window or patio. We have painted orange lines on the ground and put up signs as a reminder. Please note that the rule of only 5 people in a group at one time remains in place as well.
Our Outbreak Experience
It was very difficult to receive the news that we were in outbreak. Nonetheless, when we did receive notice that one of our staff tested positive we immediately implemented a plan that had been prepared in advance. Unfortunately, this meant isolating residents to their rooms and providing all meals individually as well. This was not easy for the staff or the residents.
However, I can tell you that once more the LMH staff rose to the challenge. It was no small feat to provide three meals a day in two separate Homes to 132 residents from one central kitchen. I want to thank the staff for their hard work and dedication, and our Senior Management Team for the exemplary leadership that they provided during this time. I also want to thank the residents for their patience and understanding during this long ten-day period. I wish I could describe in more detail the feelings of joy and relief present when we were able to announce that the Home had come out of its outbreak status - a great weight had been lifted!
I want to thank you for the continued notes of encouragement, for your thoughts and prayers, and for the blessings of treats, coffee breaks, and meals which continue to provide the LMH staff with encouragement and the motivation to keep going. I wound't be truthful if I didn't say that this is all starting to make our staff and residents wear a little thin. Please know how much we do appreciate the support from family, friends, and our supporting congregations!
Finally, I have one housekeeping item for your consideration. As you may know, our Annual General Meeting (AGM) was originally scheduled for March 24th, 2020. For obvious reasons related to COVID-19, this could not take place. On behalf of the Leamington Mennonite Home Board of Directors, I have been asked to advise you all that the AGM has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00pm. The location for this meeting is yet to be determined - the Board is hopeful that this can be a face-to-face meeting. However, if we remain under social distancing guidelines at that time, the meeting will proceed by video call via ZOOM, which many of us have become accustomed to using.
Wishing you all good health as we navigate through this difficult time!
